10 Years UreaKnowHow.com!

How it began, we go back to summer 2008: Jo Eijkenboom and myself flying to China targeting to sell another project for Stamicarbon...While visiting all these urea plants, we noticed that almost all managers and engineers working in these plants were struggling the same issues and had the same questions...As most of the times, on our trip we discussed technical issues and the business (haha, no worries we also enjoyed our life besides our work) and then a lightbulb idea popped up! Why not organise technical Round Table discussions online and include a Library with urea documents, a Gallery with relevant pictures and movies and distribute Technical Papers ? And why not build up a network of people working all urea plants worldwide and invite expert companies to join the network to promote their products and services as a kind of virtual exhibition. 24 hours per day, 365 days a year people in our urea network could get into contact with each other! This for sure would contribute to improve the safety and performance of all urea plants in the world! UreaKnowHow.com was born in our minds!...

Improve Safety in Our Industry

Together with AmmoniaKnowHow.com, we are focusing on safety within the ammonia and urea industry. We organize process safety training programs for ammonia and urea plants. We collect safety incidents in Incident Databases, create Risk Registers and are founding FIORDA.
FIORDA is the Fertilizer Industry Operational Risk Database, a shared cloud based database of near misses and incidents for nitrogen fertiliser producers to learn from and to improve safety and reliability figures in their plants.

Higher Nitrogen Use Efficiencies

The world is changing. Human population is surging towards 10 billion, food, water, climate and energy security are all at risk. Nitrogen could be our life raft in this global 'perfect storm'. Get it right and it can help to feed billions, fuel our cars and put a dent in global warming. Get it wrong and it will make things a whole lot worse.

Greenify Fertilizers

In several areas worldwide, the availability of natural gas as feedstock for nitrogen fertilizer production continues to decline, while its price increases, encouraging the search for renewable feedstocks for the future green urea industry. Another driver are the Paris accords where nearly 200 countries agreed to reduce green house gas emissions significantly.
Renewable feedstocks include waste biomass, hydrogen from solar PV-electrolysis, and the combination of these feedstocks with natural gas. The selection of a green production strategy is a critical step in the trade-off between economic and environmental considerations.
The aim of enclosed paper is to propose a green urea production strategy using a multi-objective optimization model to minimize production costs and environmental impacts by considering the future cost development of technologies and feedstock price for each technology in the time frame of 2020-2050. The results show that green urea production can reduce production costs and greenhouse gas emissions, compared to conventional urea production. For example for Indonesian conditions, biomass gasification technology fulfills the minimum requirements for production cost and CO2 emissions from 2020 to 2035 and combined biomass gasification-PV electrolysis without battery technology is the optimum process from 2040 to 2050.
